Ride-hailing thins out and then stops

A 7-day Bali itinerary that leaves the south behind
Seven days is the first length at which Munduk, Sekumpul and Menjangan are reachable without ruining the week. It is also the one where the drive home needs planning.
In short
Seven days is what the north and west of Bali actually cost. Munduk, Sekumpul and Menjangan are two hours apart from each other and three to four hours from the airport — reachable on a week, punishing on anything shorter.

The seven days, in order
Drive times are off-peak, and on this route they are the constraint rather than a detail.
Day one
Uluwatu, and the Kecak at sunset
Ngurah Rai to the Uluwatu peninsula is about 20 kilometres and 45 minutes to an hour. Settle in, then Pura Luhur Uluwatu on its 70-metre cliff in the late afternoon — the macaques there are practised thieves, so sunglasses go in a bag. The Kecak fire dance starts around 18:00 and runs an hour.

Day two
Inland to Ubud, terraces and holy spring
Uluwatu to Ubud is roughly 45 kilometres and up to 1.5 hours. Morning in the galleries — the Neka Art Museum, or the textile centre if weaving interests you more than painting. Then Tegalalang, best early or late rather than at midday, and Tirta Empul, the spring temple with thirteen spouts where sarongs are provided at the gate.

Day three
East Bali, temples and water palaces
East from Ubud, 50 to 70 kilometres and 1.5 to 2 hours depending on which sites you take. Besakih, the mother temple, is 23 temples on the slope of Mount Agung — Bali's highest volcano at 3,031 metres — and deserves a full two hours. Then the Karangasem water palaces: Tirta Gangga, built in 1946 by the last raja, and Ujung, rebuilt after the 1963 eruption and the 1979 earthquake.

Day four
North to the waterfall country
Ubud to Munduk is about 60 kilometres and two hours, climbing the whole way. The waterfalls up here — Munduk and Banyumala Twin among them — take a short jungle walk to reach and reward it with a swimmable pool. A coffee and spice plantation covers Arabica, Robusta, vanilla and cloves. Ulun Danu Beratan sits on Lake Bratan on the way through.

Day five
Stay up in Munduk, and walk to Sekumpul
Sleep in the highlands rather than driving back down — this is the day that makes the difference. Morning trek through the coffee and clove plantations, three to five kilometres over two to three hours. In the afternoon, Sekumpul: seven cascades into a gorge, reached by a steep path and a river crossing, about 1.5 hours each way. Bring shoes you do not mind soaking.

Day six
West to the national park and Menjangan
Munduk to Pemuteran is around 70 kilometres and two hours, dropping from mountains to a dry, quiet coast that looks nothing like the south. West Bali National Park, established in 1982, covers roughly 190 square kilometres of monsoon forest, mangrove and reef; the entry permit is about IDR 200,000 per person. Menjangan Island is a short boat ride, and the snorkelling there is the best on Bali.

Day seven
The long drive back — plan the flight around it
Pemuteran to Ngurah Rai is 120 to 140 kilometres and three to four hours, and there is no fast road. That single number decides the shape of your last day: an evening flight gives you a final morning swim, a midday flight does not give you breakfast. Tell the desk your flight time first and the day gets built backwards from it.

The day-seven drive is the one thing on this page we would ask you to read twice. Three to four hours to the airport from the far north-west is normal, not a delay — and it is the reason some guests move back to the south on day six and fly out relaxed on day seven instead.
